DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING AN EFFECTIVE ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM Part I: Selection Of A Testing Firm Part II: Developing Specifications Part III: Anatomy Of a Shutdown; Implementing The Program |
Planning Meeting Upon arrival to the site for the meeting we discovered that there were two electrical contractors working at the facility and both would be involved with the preventative maintenance. The facilities maintenance supervisor wanted detailed specifications on what type of testing and maintenance would be done. They wanted this specification to be done in accordance with the manufacturers recommended procedures. They were given a brief overview of the typical maintenance procedures and told that a walk through of the facility would be required to determine what equipment was installed and the general condition. The facility had four substations, one high voltage switch lineup and one outdoor high voltage switch which serves as the main. Each substation was a combination of high voltage switches, dry and liquid filled transformers, bolted pressure switches, electronic trip and molded case circuit breakers. The four substations were installed throughout the large manufacturing and warehouse facility, with the main switch and one of the substations located outdoors. Because there were two electrical contractors involved, the substations were split between the two. Each contractor would get two substations with one doing additional installation work and the other responsible for the electrical shutdown and high voltage switch maintenance. Our responsibility would be for all distribution transformers and low voltage switchboards in the four substations. Everyone involved would be providing labor, the facility maintenance personnel, electrical contractor(s) and Powertronic, Inc. The facility viewed the maintenance shutdown as an opportunity to get their personnel familiar with the inside of the equipment and save money on project cost. This would truly be a team effort, each entity providing their expertise. We were given a week to provide detailed specifications and price working towards a Thanksgiving weekend shutdown. After reviewing this information another meeting would be planned to outline the actual shutdown requirements. |
